SEPTEMBER COLOURS

Sue O’Donnell. 18.09.20

Sit and admire the gentle colours of September,

As remember, there will be a full twelve months

Before we return to this particular month of glory.

Some colours are softer like the September sunlight,

Bathing our world in a quieter light.

Softly coloured clumps with pockets of brown,

The summer’s strong shades gradually die down.

Buff, brown, gold and tan the garden grasses

Have even now begun to hint at autumn.

The summer passes gracefully,

Many gentle colours offset by the soft sway, away

Of gorgeous grasses, interesting in texture

And always, but always, statuesque.

Some would say ‘The best is yet to be’,

For we see in September, not now summer,

But neither adorned by the forthcoming

Loud blaze of an autumn tint, their dying hint.

We see gardens bathed in soft light,

Sunlight to highlight the graceful grasses.

A time most mellow, much around us

Gradually, slowly softening to yellow,

What a month of surprising contrasts,

Being at times, refusing to let go of summer’s hot colour,

Whilst currently also enjoying quieter, gentler colours.

I suppose this should not actually be surprising,

For the creative capacity of the Lord God,

In all His sovereign authority, is of the widest variety.

Who says this contrast should not happen concurrently!

Lord, September is a truly marvellous month in its contrasting range of colours. As we appreciate this, may our thoughts turn towards Your majesty of creativity. For then we see love in action expertly. And by this, by love appreciated, we find we want to pray in all praise with thanksgiving. This is a welcome change from approaching You with a shopping list of requests, petitions, supplications and intercessions. Dearest Father, please help us daily, praying in all praise with heartfelt thanksgiving. Amen.
